2)Les États-Unis! - A vocabulary and reading comprehension exercise. (handout)
3) Notes: Prepositions with Countries and Continents
- If we want to say "to or "in" when we talk about countries, in French, we have to decide if the name of the country is masculine or feminine.
- If the name of the country is masculine, we use "au" - au Canada -Il va au Canada.
- If the name of the country is feminine, we use "en" - en France - Il va en France.
- If the name of the country is plural, we use "aux" - aux Pays-Bas
- All of the continents are feminine, therefore we use "en" - en Europe.
4) Notes: Pouvoir et devoir
In French, when we say it is possible (we can)to do something, we use the verb "pouvoir" + a verb in the infinitive. e.g. Vous pouvez visiter les sites de Paris.
The verb "pouvoir" must be conjugated.
To say it is necessary to do something (you must), we use the verb "devoir" + a verb in the infinitive. e.g. On doit voyager en train. The verb devoir must be conjugated.
Pouvoir:
je peux
tu peux
il/elle/on peut
nous pouvons
vous pouvez
ils/elles peuvent
Devoir:
je dois
tu dois
il/elle/on doit
nous devons
vous devez
ils doivent
